KCAO News Briefs: September 3 to 9
September is Hunger Action Month
This September, join us in observing Hunger Action Month, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating food insecurity. As a nonprofit committed to social welfare, we urge our community to come together to address this pressing issue. We’d like to highlight our food programs so the community can fully utilize the resources available.
CalFresh Healthy Living
The CalFresh Healthy Living program focuses on increasing healthy behaviors among low-income populations in Kings County. It does this through physical activity education, nutrition education, community outreach events, partnerships, and creating policies and environments that support fruit and vegetable consumption and daily physical activity. The program conducts education in creative and culturally appropriate methods at schools, workplaces, community centers, and other sites.
If you would like to receive more information about the program or would like to schedule an education class at your site or for your community event, please call the CalFresh program at (559) 583-8071.
Summer Food Services Program (SFSP)
The Summer Food Services Program (SFSP) provides free nutritious meals to children (at or below the age of 18) of low-income families during the summer months. Meals are served at various sites in Kings County, including Avenal, Hanford, Kettleman City, Lemoore, and Stratford. To learn more, call (559) 583-8071.
Day Care Homes Food Program (DCH)
The Day Care Homes (DCH) program provides reimbursement for meals and snacks to licensed family child care providers in Kings County. The program targets low-income areas and providers with children in need. Care providers must meet USDA guidelines for meal patterns and foods served. DCH has a dedicated staff to assist providers with program requirements. For more information, call (559) 583-8071.
The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP)
The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is a federal program that helps supplement the diets of low-income Americans by providing them with emergency food assistance at no cost.
We currently have food distribution sites located in Hanford, Kettleman City, Corcoran, Lemoore, Stratford and Avenal. The calendar of food distribution sites is updated monthly and available on our website.
