KCAO News Briefs: October 1 to 7
Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to unite in raising awareness for the urgent need to end this form of abuse that affects so many lives.
First, what is domestic violence? It's a form of abuse that can be physical, emotional, or psychological, and it happens within relationships. It affects people of all backgrounds, genders, and walks of life.
Forms of abuse include Physical & Sexual, Financial, Emotional, stalking and harassment.
The history of Domestic Violence Awareness Month traces back to 1981 as a "Day of Unity." It has since evolved into a month-long campaign to connect and unite individuals and organizations working to end domestic violence.
You may also notice people wearing purple ribbons this month. The purple ribbon is in honor of domestic violence victims and support for growing awareness and serves as a visual commitment to ending domestic violence.
