Head Start’s 59th Birthday

For 59 years, Head Start programs have supported America's most vulnerable young children.

On May 18, Head Start and Early Head Start celebrate their birthday.

Across the nation, 1,600 agencies offer Head Start services in various communities. These programs focus on providing early learning, health, and family well-being services to children aged birth to 5 and their families. Serving families in urban, suburban, and rural areas, Head Start offers its services in centers, family child care homes, or in the child's own home.

Kings Community Action Organization (KCAO) introduced the Head Start program as a pilot initiative in the summer of 1965.

The KCAO Head Start program accommodates 792 children across various programs like Regional, Early, Migrant & Seasonal, and Early Head Start Child Care Partnerships.

For 59 years, the KCAO Head Start program has impacted families in Kings County. The effects can be seen today, with former Head Start alumni contributing to our communities and growing the program by working as educators and administrators.
