Save our water!
Even though California's water supply has shown improvement this year, it's important to remember the impact of the historic drought over the years and how it has rapidly depleted California’s water supply.
Hotter, drier weather conditions may reduce California’s water supply by as much as 10% by 2040. Each household is still urged to use water wisely to prepare.
KCAO has partnered with the Office of Community Partnerships and Strategic Communications (OCPSC) and the Department of Water Resources (DWR) to raise awareness among Kings County community members about the significance of water conservation.
Research shows that only 30% of adults rank drought and a lessening water supply as the state’s most important environmental issue. This means that the drought is not top-of-mind for Californians and communities lack urgency because people believe the drought is cyclical, not permanent.
So how can we all conserve water in our daily lives?
Fixing leaks inside and outside the home can save up to 90 gallons of water each day.
Running the washing machine only when full can save up to 45 gallons per load.
Running the dishwasher only when full saves up to 24 gallons per load compared to washing dishes by hand.
Installing aerators can save up to half a gallon per minute.
Installing high-efficiency toilets can save up to 35 gallons per day.
Instead of letting the water run while washing veggies and fruits, fill a bowl with water, drop them in, and wipe them dry.
When you’re waiting for your shower to warm up, place a bucket inside the shower to catch all the cold water and use it for your plants or in your garden.
Shorten your showers, take cold showers, and turn off the water while shaving. Each of these actions can save over 10 gallons of water per shower.
About 40% of the water Californians use at home is used outdoors. When we cut back on watering in the yard and planting local water-wise plants, we conserve our most precious resource!
Water conservation can’t stop, even when it rains. Let's make every drop count!
