National Nutrition Month: Food Initiatives

KCAO provides several initiatives around food insecurity in Kings County. This week we’d like to go over them to increase awareness during National Nutrition Month.

Community Garden

The KCAO Community Garden, located at the Home Garden Opportunity Center in Hanford, provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy nature, exercise, and grow nutritious fruits and vegetables.

Starting in May, come and join us at the Community Garden Clean-Up on the first Saturday of every month from 8 am to 11 am.

  • Our garden is accessible to the public from Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm.

  • Weekend access arrangements can be made.

  • We welcome donations of seeds.

For more information, please contact Home Garden Opportunity Center at (559) 772-4391.

Food Pantries

KCAO has partnered with Family Health Care Network (FHCN) and West Hills, Lemoore (WHL) to offer Food Pantries at their facilities. These food pantries will provide support to Kings County residents who struggle to find enough nutritious food for their next meal.

Emergency Food

Emergency Food Boxes are offered once a month Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at KCAO’s Resource and Referral Building in Hanford, Home Garden Opportunity Center (HGOC), and the Kettleman City Family Resource Center.

The emergency food boxes can contain rice, beans, fruits, vegetables, peanut butter, pasta, oatmeal, powdered milk, tuna or canned protein.

Homeless-Friendly Food Bags

The Home Garden Opportunity Center provides homeless-friendly food bags. These bags are homeless-friendly because they contain food items that don't require a stove to cook.

The is open from HGOC is 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

Groceries2Go

Groceries2Go is an appointment-based grocery pick-up program available at the Kettleman City Family Resource Center.

Appointments must be made online in advance and a maximum of two appointments may be booked every 30 days.

This is available to all Kings County residents

Appointments can be made on the Family Resource Center page. To make an appointment visit this link (kcao.org/family-resource-centers
